Starmer Set to Hold Emergency Cabinet Session on Gaza Crisis
This extraordinary session, convened despite Parliament’s summer break, reflects mounting government pressure to officially recognize a Palestinian state.
Although ministers are on leave until September 1, the gravity of the conflict has forced a rare recall, as first detailed by media.
On Monday, Starmer is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump in Scotland, where he is expected to push the White House for a stronger approach toward Israel.
In parallel, Foreign Secretary David Lammy will attend a United Nations conference in New York this week centered on advancing a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.
The summit will focus on potential measures leading to formal Palestinian state recognition.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has maintained a relentless and brutal assault on Gaza, dismissing international ceasefire appeals. The offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 59,800 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, devastating the enclave and triggering critical food shortages.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel is confronting a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its military operations in the enclave.
