UK Starmer Hit with Mounting Resignation Demands

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is confronting the most serious threat to his leadership yet, with up to 70 Labour members of parliament either openly calling for his resignation or pressing him to commit to a departure timeline — a dramatic show of internal dissent that signals deepening fractures within the ruling party.

The rebellion erupted in the wake of a punishing round of elections that exposed the fragility of Starmer's grip on power. Senior Labour figures are now openly questioning the party's trajectory, casting a long shadow over the Prime Minister's authority at Downing Street.

Starmer moved to contain the fallout, conceding that his government had made errors while defending its record. He insisted it had "got the big political choices right," and pledged to silence his "doubters" — though the defiance did little to quiet the growing chorus demanding a leadership change.

The crisis is further fuelled by a report in The Times that Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among no fewer than four serving ministers who have privately counselled the Prime Minister to consider setting out a timetable for stepping down.

The electoral damage driving the unrest was sweeping. In Wales, Labour suffered a historic loss in the Senedd elections. In Scotland, the Scottish National Party secured a fifth consecutive term in the Scottish Parliament. Across 136 English local authorities — together forming the largest electoral test since Labour's landslide 2024 general election win — results compounded the party's woes.

Adding to the alarm, the far-right Reform UK continued its dramatic ascent, capturing more than 1,450 council seats and extending the momentum it built during last year's local elections.
